BACK TO SCHOOL: New school year, new Association news By now, your 2006-07 school year is well under way, and so is the work of your SCAE office. A number of changes have taken place since the last edition of the Local Link was distributed: new officers and directors have taken office, new hours have been established for the local office in its new location, and a new website has been created that we hope will keep members apprised of information and events that support all of us in making SCAE the leading advocate for quality public education in the Upstate.
OFFICERS & DIRECTORS: Your officers for 2006-07 include President Pam Stowell, teacher at Dorman High School; Vice President Laura Palmer, assistant principal at Carver Junior High School; and Secretary-Treasurer Christy DePaol, teacher at McCracken Junior High School. Your directors include (District 1) Donna Bolt, Holly Springs Motlow Elementary School; (District 2) Debra Johnson, Cooley Springs Fingerville Elementary School; (District 3) Caroline Johnston, Broome High School; (District 4) Gail High, Woodruff Middle School; (District 5) Terri McMillan, Beech Springs Intermediate Schools; (District 6)Barbara Smalls, Lone Oak Elementary School; and (District 7) Daniela Sherard, Carver Junior High School. NEW HOURS IN OUR NEW LOCATION: For those who haven’t visited the office since we moved from the old Spartanburg Arts Center, the SCAE office is now conveniently located at 1000 South Pine Street in Spartanburg, in offices housed in the Bartsch Electrical Heating and Air Building (across Pine Street from the GRACE Management Building). Office Assistant Nancy Turner is now joined by former SCAE President Bert Jeffries-Morrow in providing service to SCAE members during our new regular office hours, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. from Mondays through Thursdays. Communication with us outside office hours has not changed; members who leave messages at our office number, 864-585-1971, should have their calls returned within the next business day. NEW EMAIL & WEBSITE: As part of our overall goal of using modern technologies to communicate with, and provide more service to, members, SCAE now has an online presence at www.scaespartanburg.com, and we’re adding information and features to the website as time permits. The page is only a few days old, but we’d love to hear your suggestions or to receive your news and digital photographs at our new email address, scae@bellsouth.net.
Professional development resources now available at SCAE office Limited numbers of several recent publications from NEA are available for review at the SCAE office, including the popular “The Puzzle of Autism,” released this year. Titles include “An Invitation to National Board Certification,” “A Parent’s Guide to Raising Scientifically Literate Children,” “Characteristics of Schools That Are Effective in Teaching All Children to Read,” “A Teacher’s Guide to Religion in the Public Schools,” “NCLB: Impacting Property Values in Our Community,” and “Advice on Reading From Experts: Teachers.” In addition, we have several copies of the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s 2006 Kids Count Pocket Guide, a resource that shows how South Carolina compares to other states in 10 key indicators of child well-being, such as child and teen death rates, percentages of high school dropouts, percentages of teenagers not attending school and not working, percentages of children living in homes where parents are not employed, percentages of children in poverty, and percentages of children not living with two parents. An even handier “data wheel” presents the same information in an easy-to-read format.
Association Representatives attended training workshop August 1 More than two dozens SCAE Association Representatives attended a training on August 1 to preview new programs and services available to educators and school districts employees through membership in SCAE, The SCEA and NEA. UniServ Director Roger Smith discussed the importance of organizing educators, and past president of The SCEA-Retired Janet Agnew gave an oral history of the interrelationship between SCAE, The SCEA and NEA. Door prizes included three “Vacations of a Lifetime” and two $50 cash prizes. Winners of the $50 prizes were Agnes Hill of Dorman High School and Brenda Morrison of Pacolet Elementary School. SCAE was pleased to be joined at the training by officers and Association Representatives of the Cedar Springs Education Association and the Cherokee County Education Association, which made this a real collaborative event between SCAE and our sister associations. August 1, 2006 AR Training – Cedar Springs, Cherokee & Spartanburg Palmer promotes SCAE, The Total Teacher at Dist. 7 orientation SCAE Vice President and newly-appointed Carver Junior High School assistant principal Laura Palmer spoke to the District 7 orientation for new teachers in August, noting a selection of benefits available through membership in SCAE, and highlighting especially The Total Teacher, a classroom philosophy and training by Lorraine Milark. Since 2002, Milark has worked with local associations, districts and schools to bring her highly-successful philosophy to educators in South Carolina, North Carolina, Florida, Maryland and elsewhere. Completion of The Total Teacher now also brings graduate credit though the College of Charleston. Vice President Palmer and SCAE are working to bring Milark to Spartanburg County, and details of those plans will be forthcoming. Until then, members should contact Lorraine directly at information@thetotalteacher.com if your school or district are interested in hosting a TTT training, and mention your membership in SCAE. Spartanburg Vice-President, Laura Palmer NEXT MEETINGS: SCAE’s next regular meetings are scheduled at 4:30 p.m. on September 7 and October 5 at the Spartanburg County Public Library. All members are invited to participate and speak to issues important to Spartanburg County educators.
